Installing the Dental Implant

Dental implants are installed in three steps: Inserting the implant screw, attaching the post and installing the crown.

1. Inserting the Implant

First, a dentist surgically places an implant directly into the jawbone, positioned like a natural tooth root. The implant will usually remain covered for three to six months to allow bone to develop around the implant to help hold it in place.

2. Attaching the Post

Once the bone has developed around the implant, the dentist uncovers the implant and attaches an extension called a post. The surrounding gum tissue then needs to heal — a process that typically takes several months.

3. Installing the Crown

Once healing is complete, the implant is ready to serve as a foundation for the new tooth. The dentist makes a crown (or another artificial tooth replacement) and attaches it to the implant post.

Process Overview

Before surgery

The bone of your jaw will be evaluated with an X-ray. The quality and quantity of jaw bone will determine the type and number of implants needed to support your new prosthesis. You will also be able to discuss and determine with your surgeon if you wish to do your treatment with local anesthesia only or if you prefer to receive intravenous sedation. The possibility of performing your treatment under general anesthesia will also be discussed.

The Intervention

In any case, we will first locally anesthetize the area of your jaw where the implants will be placed. The dental implants are then inserted into the jaw by screwing them at a very low speed so as not to damage the bone. Some techniques allow artificial teeth to be placed within hours of implant placement. In other cases, removable temporary replacement teeth will be used.

The Healing Process

Once the intervention is completed, medication will be prescribed to ensure your comfort and promote a fast and optimal healing. A 24-hour emergency service is also offered to our patients if needed.
